The Mediating Role of Work Engagement on Relationship Between Transformational Leadership, Job Characteristic Model, Innovative Work Behavior and Turnover Intention

Abstract


Purpose – This study aims to examine The mediating role of work engagement is tested within the relationship on transformational leadership, job characteristic model, work behavior, and turnover intention.

Design/methodology/approach – Respondents to a survey were 325 change agent from one state institution in Indonesia, consist of 209 males and 116 females. Respondents have to answer 58 questions in Likert type. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with Lisrel application was used to test hypothesized relationship.

Findings – Work engagement fully mediates the relationship between transformational leadership and innovative work behavior, and partially mediates the relationship between the  job characteristic model and innovative work behavior. transformational leadership and job characteristic also significantly related with work engagement. The results of this study are in line with previous research that examines the positive relationship of transformational leadership and job characteristic model with work engagement.  

Research limitations/implications –The result of this study can not generalize in other industries or country because the study focuses only on one government institution in Indonesia.

Originality/value – This study complements existing research about work engagement by investigating transformational leadership and job characteristic model as an antecedents, and innovative work behavior and turnover intention as an outcome.
