LIPSTICK FORMULATION USING NATURAL PIGMENT FROM JAMBLANG FRUIT PEEL (Syzigium cuminii L.) EXTRACT WITH VCO

Abstract


Background : Jamblang fruit peel extract has anthocyanin, that has potential to be used as coloring substance for lipstick product.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to make safe and stable lipstick product using natural colouring from Jamblang fruit peel extract.

Material and Methods : Jamblang fruit peel was extracted with etanol 96% by kinetic maceration and the produced extract was tested for standard quality extract test, phytochemical screening, anthocyanin total value measured at λ510 nm and 700 nm and antioxidant IC50 with DPPH method. The lipstick was made in 3 pH variation (Acid ,Neutral and Alkali). Melting point, breaking point, stability with cycle test method of shape alteration , colour and odor, smear, pH tests and irritation subjected on shaved skin of male albino rabbit were also performed in the current study.

Result: The result showed that Jamblang fruit peel extract has antioxidant activity IC50 196,30µg/mL (average activity), Anthocyanin total value 0,2642%. Free of heavy metal content. The Anthocyanin color in Syzigium cuminii L extract also changed by pH, while in acid changed to be pink, neutral pH showed purple colour and in alkali gave blue to green colour. The lipstick preparation were easy applied, stable in three cycle tests and did not irritate male albino rabbit shaved skin.

Conclusion : Accordingly, the jamblang fruit peel extract can be used as natural colouring in lipstick preparation.
