Abstract

Background: The essential oil of clove (Syzygium aromaticum.) have activity as anti-inflammatory. The development of dosage form has been done with addition of enhancer in the formulation of cream type W/O and O/W to increase the capability of its to penetrate the layers of skin. Objective: This study aimed to know the influence of composition of oleic acid (OA) and propylene glycol (PG) in the formulation of cream type W/O and O/W to the physical characteristic of cream and transport profile of eugenol in essential oil of clove. Materials and Methods: This study was performed based on Simplex Lattice Design methods with three combination variation of OA and PG in cream: 100% OA-0% PG (F1), 0% OA-100% PG (F2) and 50% OA-50% PG (F3). The cream was made by melting method and then was evaluated for physical characteristics (adhesivity, spreadability, pH) and transport parameters (permeability, flux). Results: The increasing composition of PG in each dosage forms caused decreasing of the spreadability, increasing of pH and adhesivity. The transport profile was depended on the type of dosage form. The raising composition of PG in the cream type O/W caused the increasing of flux and permeability. On the other hand, the increasing composition of PG in cream type W/O caused parabola profile based on the amount of flux and permeability. Conclusion: Based on these results, a combination of oleic acid and propylene glycol influenced the physical characetristic and transport profile of eugenol in essential oil of clove. Formulation essential oil of clove in cream type O/W better than cream type W/O.
