Abstract

Background: Spirulina is used to overcome malnutrition with easily oxidized high β-carotene content. In order to increase its acceptability, it is formulated in the chewable tablet using direct press method that meets requirements and is acceptable to the community. Objective: This study aims to determine the optimal formula for spirulina chewable tablets through the development of formulas on aerosil 200 (dryer and lubricant), PEG 6000 (glidant), and maltodextrin (dryer). Methods : The first development was carried out the optimization of the dry extract formula of Spirulina platensis (aerosil 200 dryer) using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method with Aerosil 200 as a lubricant and PEG 6000 as a glidant. The tablet's physical properties observed were organoleptic, weight uniformity, tensile strength, friability and disintegration time. The second development, aerosil 200 dryer in the optimal formula was substituted with maltodextrin and tested for physical properties. The two results of the physical properties test were analyzed using one sample t-test with a 95% confidence level. Results: The first development results were the optimum formula for chewing tablets with 25 mg aerosil 200 (lubricant) and 5 mg PEG 6000 (glidant) with 0.58% weight uniformity deviation, 4.52 kgf/cm2 tensile strength, 0.74% friability and 3.69 seconds disintegration time. The validation results showed that there were no significant differences in the physical properties of the SLD prediction results with the actual results. The second formula development, the results of organoleptic tests on tablets appearance and aroma with aerosil 200 dryers were more desirable than those of maltodextrin dryers. While the weight uniformity, tensile strength, friability and disintegration time showed no significant differences. Conclusion : The optimal formula for spirulina chewable tablets and fulfilling the quality requirements of traditional medicines is using aerosil 200 dryers, with 25 mg aerosil 200 (lubricant) and 5 mg PEG 6000 (glidant).
