Abstract
Background: Peptic ulcer disease is a disease that affects many people of the world including Indonesia. The alternative treatment of peptic ulcer disease that using extracts of traditional medicinal plants such as chayote. Based of the previous research proved that the chayote extract having antiulcer activity. Using chayote extract as a medicine is less practical, requiring the development of pharmaceutical preparations, one of which preparation of instant granules. Objective: The objective of this studies is to know the physical properties of the instant granules of chayote extract (Sechium edule) as the effect of the concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone and determine the concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone which produces the best granules. Materials and Methods: There are three formulas of the design of the experimental research that have been made with the variation of polyvinylpyrrolidone’s concentration the amount of formula I is 1%, formula II 3%, and formula III 5%. Each of formula tested physical properties (flow rate test, moisture content, and time of dissolution) and favourite test (hedonic test). Results: Instant granules physical test results indicate that the formula I, II and III meets the requirements of the physical properties of the granules to get a good flow rate consecutive: 2.3; 2.4; 2; 48 seconds, the water content in the granule: 2.19%; 2.58%; 2.65%, and the time required to dissolve: 53.84; 46.00; 40.48 sec. Favorite test result (Hedonic Test) colors: 2,3; 2.2; 2.37, scent: 2,43; 2.60; 2.67, and flavor: 2,23; 2.76; 2,76 which means formula III is most preferred in the third test of the colour, scent, and flavor. Conclusion: Based on above results it can be concluded that the formula III meets the requirements of the good physical properties of granules and acceptable by the respondents. The concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone in the instant granules of chayote extract the best yield is 5% granules.
