Objective: To study whether plasma endotoxin level is a new mechanism of Xingnaojing injection (XNJ) in treating cerebral hemorrhage. Methods: 50 male ICR mice were randomly divided into sham operation group, model group (cerebral hemorrhage), sodium aescinate 0.9 mg/kg group and XNJ 10 ml/kg group. Intracerebral hemorrhage model in mice was established by injecting collagenase into brain stereotaxic apparatus; Garcia test was used to evaluate the neurological function of mice; water content in brain tissue was measured by dry-wet weight method; intestinal mucosal permeability was measured by FITC-D method; and endotoxin content in plasma was measured by ELISA method. Results: XNJ can reduce the effect of cerebral hemorrhage on central nervous system function, treat brain edema, reduce intestinal mucosal permeability and plasma endotoxin content. Conclusion: XNJ can alleviate the effect of endotoxin on cerebral hemorrhage and edema, which may be one of the mechanisms of XNJ in treating cerebral hemorrhage.

Key words: Xingnaojing injection; cerebral hemorrhage; nerve function; brain edema; intestinal mucosal permeability; endotoxin.
