Abstract

Background: Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is one of the natural ingredients that contain natural colour pigments are anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a water soluble pigments which is naturally found in various type of plants. Objective: This study aims to prove that purple fleshed sweet potato extract (Ipomoea batatas L.) can be used as a natural dye in manufacture of lipstick preparation. Materials and Methods: The method used in this research was the maceration extraction method with sample of 250 grams of dried purple sweet potato, where the liquid used is 95% ethanol. The condition of maceration is acid. The filtrate of maceration must be thickened. The lipstick component consisted formula of lipstick is cera alba, lanolin, cetyl alcohol, paraffin solid, oleum ricini, propylene glycol, nipasol, and the addition of purple sweet potato extract with a concentration of 0%, 2.4%, 4.5% and 14.6%.  Results: The material of lipstick is easy to apply, unstable color, homogenous, melting point at 530C, pH range from 5-6 and all lipstick have an average breaking point at 377.5 grams. Conclusion: Based on these results, extract of purple sweet potato can be used as a pigment color in the manufacture of lipstick but additional material is needed that can keep the lipstick color from being degraded by temperature.
